  These talent management people create ______ for assessing leadership capabilities and set the strategy for upgrading leadership talent over time. GE’s talent management people, for example, play a critical role, at both the corporate and business-unit ______, in filling key positions, insuring smooth successions, driving company-wide review processes, and building tools that managers can use to direct their own careers.

  On paper, this approach makes perfect sense. Having great talent is a strategic imperative, so giving the job to a centralized team of “experts” should ensure that it’s done right. A ______ function also enables a comprehensive and objective view of the company’s talent landscape (overcoming the problem of _____ hiding talent), and makes it easier to _______ solutions, such as leadership training, that cut across the organization and can be delivered cost-effectively.

PTE阅读真题解析:FIB题型(一)


  答案解析:

  这篇文章摘自Harvard Business Review,讲的是有关HR的talent managemnt理论。

  选项中有两个大家可能不认识的词,一个是paragon,另一个是silo。讲真,说silos看得出是名词复数的话,paragon的词性真的猜不出,除非你认识这个单词。Paragon的意思是:模范(n.)或模范的(adj.),和model同义。另一次词是silo,意思是:筒仓。这个词的意思更不好理解,因为在英语中silo的用法等同于那些没有实意的概念词。

  第一空:

  这一空的词性比较好确定,固定搭配,create something for...,所以填补的是名词。

  也就是说,可选的就是silos, level, processes, paragon, details。而level是可数名词,而选项中没有冠词,也可以排除。

  create details for这语义不通。后一句中提到assess capabilities,评估能力,是一个过程,根据语义可以确定是processes。

  第二空:

  corporate以及business-unit是两个层级。也就是公司整体、各部门都很重要。根据语义判断为level。

  第三空:

  a___function 当中填的是一个修饰词,一般修饰词都是形容词,那我们去看选项,其中形容词就一个,那就选它——centralized。

  第四空:

  problem of ____ hiding talent。 of后面跟名词,所以空的地方要么是名词,要么是动名词,要么是形容词。这一空靠词性分析就比较悬了,需要根据语义判断。

  这句话本身其实不太好理解,原因就是silo这个词的用法本来就比较难理解。大概就是类似于coterie一词一样,翻译为小圈子。

  同学们其实可以靠排除法把范围缩小至silos和paragon,因为毕竟其他单词语义都不通。所以,总结一下,背单词很重要!但更重要的是需要连单词的用法一起背!

  第五空:

  to ___ solutions,肯定跟动词,动词只有drive和implement solutions。drive solution这个说法不通。答案就出来了。
